The mere mention of Bedbugs is enough  to cause a shudder in even the most hardened individual. Like fleas, they are a blood-feeding parasite, but unlike fleas, lack of pets does not protect you from encountering this problem. Hotels, schools, guest houses, cinemas, public transport and care homes are just a few places where bedbugs can be found, picked up and taken home, in fact anywhere where there is a turnover of people.

Nocturnal, they come out to feed at night, having hidden away during the day, usually close to where their host sleeps. This tends to be the bedroom, their hiding places being anywhere from the seams in mattresses, to skirting boards, crevices, in photo frames and clocks or other ornaments.

They are prolific breeders, notoriously difficult to eradicate and require the specialist knowledge and professional chemicals used by experienced pest controllers in order to deal with the problem.

What can begin as one female, can quickly escalate into a serious infestation in a matter of months.

So how do I know that I have Bedbugs?

  •  Have you seen signs? Black spots (digested blood) along the seams of mattresses and upholstery are an indication that you may have Bedbugs.
  • Have you been bitten? Allergic responses to bites can show as irritating, red spots.
  • Have you perhaps seen them? An adult Bedbug is a reddish-brown, oval, crawling insect, approximately 5mm long.
  • Blood stains, from your bites, can also be another sign that you have been fed upon whilst sleeping.

Widow spiders?

Spiders are not actually insects but arachnids and most spiders found in Britain do not pose the slightest danger to ourselves or our pets.

However, there is one species of spider which is slowly getting a foothold in Britain, and needs to be treated with caution. It is, of course, the false widow. 

​A cousin of the black widow spider, it is not as dangerous, but nevertheless has been making its presence felt here in northern Europe.​


Eradica Pest Control is at present dealing with this particular spider and offers surveys and treatments to deal with this emerging problem.     


​​​The number of false widow spiders is increasing in Britain, particularly after one of the warmest Septembers on record.

Britain`s most venomous spider has a rather nasty bite, and though no deaths have been recorded in the UK, its bite has been compared to a wasp sting, with possible allergic reactions in some people.

Also, secondary bacterial infections have been known to result following a bite, and the internet is awash with reports of people needing medical assistance , and in some cases hospitalisation.

Fear of getting bitten and its possible medical consequences is a genuine cause for concern, and a bite can be, at the very least, an extremely painful and upsetting experience.

It is therefore better to err on the side of caution and avoid getting too near or touching these spiders.

So how do I know that I have false widow spiders?

  • Have you seen them? They are often found underneath items like garden furniture, shed ceilings etc. The picture above should help with identification. Remember at around 50-70mm across, the females are much larger than the males.
  • Note the egg sac in the picture, as you may see them when the spiders are not around. They are usually hung underneath items as described above by silk threads. They are around 25mm in diameter and look like a white silk ball.

DO I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH FLeas?​

Owning a pet is one of life`s pleasures, but with it can come a few unwanted freeloaders that bring misery to pets and owners alike.

 Fleas are parasites that feed on the blood of a wide variety of warm blooded vertebrates, ourselves included, resulting in irritable and painful spots, which can become inflamed and infected. They are also vectors of a number of viral and bacterial diseases.

Here at Eradica Pest Control we can treat your property to eradicate fleas in furnishings, carpets, and other floor surfaces, so that, together with recommended professional strength flea treatments for your pets, your flea problem can be controlled.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                           If you have a cat or dog they may well 

                                                          be troubled with fleas. Tell-tale signs 

                                                          include finding the parasites or their

                                                           black faecal dirt in your pet`s fur or    

                                                       observing  your pet furiously scratching.

                                                             

Before our arrival, we will ask you to vacuum all the carpets in the house, then TAKE THE VACUUM CLEANER OUTSIDE & EMPTY IT.  We will also require you to remove any light items from the floor.

We will ask you to treat your pet with a flea treatment, preferably veterinary approved and to wash the pet bedding.

We can then treat all the relevant areas of your house with a residual insecticide. You will notice the benefits of the treatment almost immediately, although it is likely to take a number of days for complete eradication as the chemicals used treat the adult fleas, not the eggs, so we have to allow time for the fleas to hatch out. Therefore, following the treatment, it is imperative that you DO NOT vacuum for AT LEAST TEN DAYS. There is no need to move furniture as fleas do not tend to congregate underneath.
